The weather is anything but predictable. While you can’t control what happens in life, you can protect your home and your family by having a plan in place in the event that your community experiences an extreme weather event.
You might be surprised to learn that floods represent one of the most common natural disasters. And, it’s one of the costliest weather events for homeowners. On average, most flood insurance claims amount to an astounding $42,000 and between 2010 to 2014, the total volume of claims for flood-related damage in the U.S. totaled more than $3.5 billion.
That’s why it is important to take the steps today to put a plan together in the event that you do experience water damage in your home. By taking the time to plan in advance, you can have the peace of mind knowing that you are prepared to protect your investment.
3 Strategies for Flood Preparedness
- Place important documents in a safe place. If you do experience a flood, you will need to access important paperwork to submit an insurance claim. Keep copies of your mortgage papers, driver’s license, social security card, birth certificate and the title for your home and other personal property. For just a few dollars a month, you can secure a safe deposit box at your local bank to keep your important documentation secure. And, you should also take photos of that paperwork with your smart phone and store digital copies in a cloud-based application for remote access.
- Take pictures. After the flood waters subside and it’s safe to return to your home, take photos of the exterior and interior of your home. Before you begin any cleanup efforts, be sure to document the current state of your entire home for your insurer.
- Remove wet materials quickly. After the water recedes, mold can quickly start to form, creating a toxic environment. Remove materials that retain water such as carpet, rugs and bedding.
